How AntiGravity Orlando Was Born: Interview with AG Orlando Founder, Daniel Stover – History of AG Series

About Daniel Stover

Daniel Stover is the Owner and Director of the Orlando division of AntiGravity®️. Daniel oversees all shows & events held at the AntiGravity®️ THEATER, and all local & out-of-town company performances.
Daniel comes from a family of musical theater performers and professionally trained dancers and earned a scholarship for gymnastics at the University of Oklahoma after only one year of gymnastics in high school. Daniel was on the OU Men’s Gymnastics Team and also competed with the OU Cheerleading Team in 1993 when they became National Champions of Collegiate Cheer. After taking first place on floor and vault at the US National Championships, Daniel went to visit his sister in New York to explore his opportunities in his post-competition life. Daniel‘s sister, Ashley, was performing on Broadway in ‘Hello Dolly’ which led to his introduction to AntiGravity founders, Christopher Harrison and Alex Schlemp. This meeting initiated a collaboration that would last more than 25 years (and still continues today)!
Daniel then followed his family and friend, Rick, and moved to Orlando for Disneys Cirque du Soleil show, “La Nouba,” performing on tumble track. Once in Orlando, Daniel was hired by Disney in the original cast of “tumble monkeys” in the ‘Festival of the Lion King’ show at Animal Kingdom. He was brought on board to also help create the acrobatic choreography and was featured as the first “Kong” character along with Jimmy Waitman in 1998.

When was AG Orlando founded?

“ In 2005, AntiGravity Orlando Performance Troupe was formed and we started off as an entertainment company and performed for corporate events around the world combining forces with the original AG NYC Troupe which was established 10 years earlier. In 2007, Team AntiGravity went on our first National Tour. Then in 2009, AntiGravity began at workshopping our new and innovative AG Yoga Fitness techniques within the Orlando facility, later becoming a worldwide fitness brand which is now featured in over 40 countries with headquarters at our AG NYC office. In 2010, AntiGravity Orlando started offering performance-base classes on silk and lyra at the original location by international drive. AntiGravity soon relocated to Kissimmee, and in 2012, AntiGravity Orlando’s National Training Facility was founded by Heather Stover. “

What is your favorite thing about AG?
“ AG embraces individuality and showcases athletes being themselves. We are different from Cirque performers in the sense that with AG, there’s no need to be a crazy whimsical creature – we are athletes on a stage. We don’t want to change anyone, just bring out the best version of you. “
“ AG is also privately funded (unlike Cirque who receives millions in Canadian government funding) which inspires profound creativity and innovation with little resources to pull from. This allows AG entertainment acts to be more affordable for booking events and to have the ability to bring imagination to reality. “

What is your favorite apparatus/skill?
Daniel – handbalancing & bungees
What’s the biggest misconception people have about your job?
“ That we are a circus. Or indoor skydiving. That our foundation comes from circus. We are gymnasts, dancers, cheerleaders, and street performers who are edgy, sexy, and rock and roll. “
What motivates your work?
“ Creating experiences for new performers like I had. I have performed internationally and experienced some incredible places, and although traveling for gigs is not what it used to be, there are still opportunities for performing that you can’t get anywhere else. Sharing those opportunities with other people and giving them a glimpse into what it’s like is what motivates me. “
Favorite gig?
“ Performing in Greece for a private party during the opening ceremonies for the Olympics.
It was an opening party event for people who host the Olympics on a private island. I performed for 4 nights in a row, then the next week was fashion week in Milan where I performed in fashion shows with major designers which led to many more events with Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang. “
First gig?
“ Orlando – Microsoft – AG hired at convention center “
What three words would your friends use to describe you?
“ dad jokes, creative, resourceful “
Reading any books/binging any shows?
“ Anything about the environment “
What book, movie, music, etc. changed your outlook on life?
– Sapiens –
Guilty pleasure?
Theme parks
Steak
What’s the best advice you were ever given?
“ Daniel – if you do the same thing over and over and expect a different outcome that is insanity – be open to change and see change in others otherwise nothing new ever happens. “
What advice would you give to your teenage self?
“ Listen to your siblings. My sisters encouraged me to stay with dance AND gymnastics. I would’ve had more opportunities and experience with a larger dance vocabulary. “
